I haven`t seen an engine ruined from t-belt failure on a contour yet . Usually when the belt comes off it is broken and must be replaced . There are cam shaft holders for keeping every thing in place when doing so.

The timing belt connects to your camshaft, crankshaft and distributor. If it fails you wont start the car. It needs replacement. And yes in some older models it can cause damage to the engine. The piston hitting a valve is one item and there are a couple other things that can happen. Hopefully none of these have occurred

Well if your timing belt is off...of course your not gonna be able to start the car LOL! tahts like common sense man. anyways no it does not ruin the engine, what you should do is...
Go get a Wrench Locate the belt tensioner (Usually on fords its the bottom back to the crankcase) put your belt on and Tighten it
But before you do all that inspect the belt for chips, cracks and stains if you see any immediatley go to your auto parts store and pick up a (serpentine belt) only 20$ and replace it
Oh and uh just to let you know...those belts are suppose to be replaced every 35 to 50 thousand miles. If those belts were to rip during DRIVING lol...wooo you better pray...thats so dangerous. On a contour how the engine is set up.. if that belt flys off your engine is gonan still spin and overload meaning...one of your pistons will blow up (shoot out of its engine block) having enough force to kill

As the others have said, I believe the 4 cylinder is a freewheeling engine meaning no damage (usually they break teeth and cause lack of power concerns before they fully pop)
Unless you really want to try, recommend a shop for this. If not you will have to find the bar that is recommended to locking the top cams in place, as well as the valve cover gasket (you have to remove the valve cover to lock the cams)
Plus our shop has replaced some of the tensioners due to weak springs before and on older vehicles , some didn't come with the spring meaning you have to order the spring and bolt.

It will run without a drive belt, timing belt is off/broken, if you keep trying and trying to start it, it may bend a valve.
