what is the norm for this situation, and help me decide what should i do ?

Only if they want you back after 2 years. It is like quiting and being rehired. They probably won't let you count the time for vesting and you probably won't come back anyhow since you might get a better job. Unless it is a huge company they can't hold a job unfilled for two years and temps cost more so they will give your job to someone else most likely.

You need to ask your company's administrator of personnell about acceptable 'LEAVE OF ABSENCE' reasons.

You typically receive 'leave' without benefits or salary.

What you should always do is negotiate with your employer. Write a proposal and emphasize a win/win situation.
If this degree involves courses that will increase your value as an employee, think like an employer and promote this.

If they have you negotiate a promise that you will work a certain length of time after your return, don't forget to negotiate a pay raise! (Right? ;-)
