I would imagine it's a form of hysteria. Whatever works for someone else is fine with me, though, as long as they don't try to get ME to squirm around on some church floor.

The Bible doesn't support what we see happening today in some churches! Tongues were originally given for the sole purpose of preaching the gospel to unbelieving Jews and were a known language; that is known to the hearer but unknown to the speaker. It was prophesied way back in the book of Isaiah that this gift would be given and happened at the time of Pentecost in Acts Ch.2. We note here that the hearers who were Jews gathered from every nation under heaven that they all marveled because they said that the speakers are all Galileans but how come we are all hearing this message in our own language wherein we were born? There are many factors against this so-called modern tongues movements of today. Yet another fault in their claim is the fact that they ramble in some ecstatic gibberish which is unknown to be any language on earth and there is no unbelieving Jew present and no interpreter. The Bible is clear in this issue, There was to be no more than 3 people speak in tongues at any one meeting of the Church and then it was to be one at a time and if there was no interpreter present, they were to remain silent in the church. Why have an interpreter? To tell the church what was being said as the hearer understood perfectly and it was to tell the speaker also as he was uttering a language which he had never learned so he himself didn't understand what was being said either. The term "unknown tongues" is given as the Lord allowed the Holy Spirit to speak through someone in a foreign language without the speaker ever having learned the language therefore the language was unknown to the speaker. I'm afraid what we see happening in some of the churches today is a total farce as we are told in the Bible that there would come a time that tongues and miracles etc., would cease and that time has long passed. This is Satan having a field day with these people as I was told by someone who eventually left one of these tongues movement that they finally realised that it was not coming from the Lord but from Satan. These tongues speakers will always tell you that the fact that they can speak in tongues evidences their salvation and is therefore a sign that they are saved. Not so says the Bible! Tongues are a sign, not to them that believe; but to them that believe not. The THEM are unbelieving Jews as we are told way back in the Book of Isaiah. God Bless!

Both. Some just ramble nonsense and say it was speaking in tongues, just one we don't understand or is no longer a spoken language. The gift of tongues is a true gift of the Holy Spirit however and is true. After Jesus bestowed the Holy Spirit upon the Disciples in the upper room, after His Resurrection and they went out, crowds gathered and all heard the words in their own language and asked how can this be. There are still those who truly have the gift of tongues.

It is rambling incoherent nonsense. The bible sets rules for speaking in tongues and how you can tell if it is real or not. I do not have the desire to look up the scriptures, but they are not too hard to find.

If it sounds like incoherent nonsense, it's not speaking in tongues. If you read Acts, those speaking in tongues could be understood by anyone listening as if the speaker was speaking in the listener's native language

Speaking in tongues is a source of great confusion. In actuality, the Bible uses the phrase to refer to those who speak other LANGUAGES, not nonsensical gibberish. Nor does God need us to speak in some sort of heavenly language for him to understand our prayers; after all, who was it who created all languages?
When God sent the holy spirit on the disciples meeting for Pentecost after Jesus ascended, they spoke in their native tongue (Acts 2:7), while those who heard them, heard in THEIR native tongues (Acts 2:6 & 11). The disciples didn't babel or gibber. They did not need an interpreter to translate some "angel language" into human speech.
As usual, the source of confusion is an incomplete and misunderstood reading of the Bible. Some people just read what they want to read and ignore the whole and wholesome Word of God.

There is your heavenly prayer language (praying in tongues) and then there is prophesy, speaking in tongues. To which do you refer?
Your heavenly prayer language is to edify your spirit. It's direct communication with God's spirit.
As for speaking in tongues (Acts 2) is usually phophesy and there needs to be an interpretation of it. Which, by the way is another gift of the spirit. I know this to be true, I have experienced it.
Hope that helps!
