I've decided to spend sunday baking cookies, and I'm looking for a chocolate chip cookie recipe without vanilla extract in it, because I dont really want to buy it. Is there such a thing? And what would happen if I just took the vanilla out. I always figured it was just for flavor?

Thanks for the help everyone! I've discovered more recipes that need vanilla, so I guess i'll go out and splurge on it. I'll experiment without the vanilla one day when my bf isn't looking forward to them so much :)

It will be fine to just leave the vanilla out of whichever recipe you want to use. The cookies will still be good, 'cause anything with chocolate is good! But they won't taste exactly like they do when you do use the vanilla.

Well, it would taste funny to a lot of people, especially if you're American. Nearly all chocolate in the states is flavored with vanilla. It also makes the cookies a bit sweeter. I've never tried to make them without, so I couldn't tell you how they'd turn out. I'd suggest borrowing from a neighbor if buying it really is a problem for you.

The vanilla is there to mellow any bitterness added by nuts so if your recipe calls for nuts don't skip it. If not, leave it out and see how things go. It's only cookies--have fun!

Gotta do the vanilla. The flavor won't be what you are looking for. dollar stores carry it super cheap take a run for it.

Try substituting almond flavoring instead. It gives them a nice twist and people seem to really like it when I have done that.

You do not need the vanilla. They will be fine.
