What can it do? wow, that is def. a vague question. but it can:
1. play movies (dvd/Blu-ray)
2. obviously play games =p
3. music
4. free online, there are microtransactions in the store but unless you want them, not necessary
5. psp remote play (do everything on the ps3 on a psp, aside from watching Blu-rays and playing PS3 games.
and much more
And COD4 is an excellent game
Assassins Creed, although i havent played it, ive heard great reviews aside from the occasional freeze/screen-tear.

The Playstation 3 can;
Play PS1/PS2/PS3 games
Play DVD and Blu Ray Movies
Surf the internet with a built in web browser
Connect to the internet through the PS3's built in wifi
Play PS2/PS3 games online with millions of other people on the Playstation Network for free
Store and listen to music
Store and watch videos
Store and view pictures
Make custom themes for the PS3
install linux
Run Folding@Home and fold proteins for cancer research
etc.
And Assassins Creed is an AWESOME game, it is by far my favorite video game for th PS3. Call of Duty 4 is also very fun, though it's campaign is short, the online is awesome.
I would also recommend Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, and Resistance: Fall of man.

I don't know anything about Assassins Creed, but COD4 is a great game. It's much more intense than COD3 and it has tons of gameplay options. It's more oriented to online play, but the single player is pretty cool, too, once you finish the game and open up arcade mode. The movement in the game is very smooth, and you don't want to stay still for long...unless you're in a ghillie suit. LOL The upgrade from PS2 to PS3 is a night and day level of change in graphics and movement...you won't be disappointed.

The 80GB PS3 has built in WiFi for connecting to the internet wirelessly, it has a Web Browser for surfing the web, it has Blu-Ray and can play Blu-Ray DVD's, regular DVD's, and CD's. It is backward compatible with PS1 and PS2 games and it has the digital camera flash card slots and 4 USB ports.
The 40GB PS3 has the same features as the 80GB PS3 except that it doesn't have the digital camera flash card slots, it cannot play PS2 games, but it can play PS1 games, and it has 2 USB ports.
