the churches are, unfortunately, full of them...they sit there, ears, hearts, and minds closed, waiting for something to happen to them, waiting for the closing hymn, wondering why they even bothered to leave the house...

LOL, a pew potato, I like that expression (see also: bench warmer, pew warmer or warm body)! It's some one comes to church (fairly regularly, at least) and although they hear the message, doesn't listen or apply it to their lives, just being a warm body in the pew. They can hear a whole years worth of sermons and leave in the same sad shape in which they came. I've heard it preached often that God doesn't want a bunch of "warm bodies".

Also, discounting spiritual progress, a pew potato can also be used to describe ones physical/social life at church, such as pertaining to fellowshipping ("Don't be a pew potato, let's get up and greet the visitors.").

I strongly doubt all pew potatos come from Idaho. A pew potatoe is a "christian" who goes to church, and that's it. Probably doesn't even go to church every week. Might be a Christmas and Easter "christian" or maybe a bi-monthly "christian". Not that you have to go to church to be a Christian.
