I found two verses along the line of what you are saying. I think the first one I'm listing below is the one you mean:

James 4:14

King James Version
Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

NIV
Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

James 1:11 is similar:

King James Version
For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.

NIV
For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich man will fade away even while he goes about his business.

These verses point out that life is so short. If we compare this life to eternity, it really is like a breath!

So while we are here we get to decide where we will spend eternity, and really don't know how long we have to decide, because we don't know when this short life will end.

Here is the verse in context.

James 4:13 Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit."

14 Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.

15 Instead, you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that."

"For, 'men are like grass,
and all their glory is like the flowers of the field;
the grass withers and the flowers fall,
but the word of the Lord stands forever.'
And this is the word that was preached to you."
(1 Peter 1:24-25)

Still you call it as God's word. with so many versions. Why not be one.
