The word "bridegroom" is derived from bride and the archaic guma, "man", from the Indogermanic root of "earth" (for "ghmún"), which evolved into Latin humanus and Germanic and English "man" and "groom". Through folk etymology the word became assimilated to groom, meaning a servant.

Groom. The main man in a wedding ceremony. That's the old term, now just referred to as the groom. But since the groom is the bride's husband-to-be, they call him the bridegroom.
Jesus is the bridegroom of the Catholic Church because he is wed spiritually to her.
Hope this helps! ;-)

In relation to the Bible:
Isa 54:5 "For your husband is your Maker, Whose name is the LORD of hosts; And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel, Who is called the God of all the earth.
Jer 31:31 "Behold, days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah,
Jer 31:32 not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them," declares the LORD.
Isaiah 54:5 & Jeremiah 31:32 states that God was a "husband" to the children of Israel until they broke the "marriage" covenant by not keeping the commandments.
So God divorces Israel (The Northern Kingdom).
Jer 3:8 "And I saw that for all the adulteries of faithless Israel, I had sent her away and given her a writ of divorce, yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear; but she went and was a harlot also.
Back to Jeremiah 31:31 God says He will make a new (renewed) covenant with the House of Israel and the House of Judah (The Northern and Southern Kingdoms making up the Twelve Tribes of Israel).
This renewed (marriage) covenant is through The Messiah, "The Bridegroom".
Luke 5:33 And they said to Him, "The disciples of John often fast and offer prayers; the disciples of the Pharisees also do the same; but Yours eat and drink."
Luke 5:34 And Jesus said to them, "You cannot make the attendants of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them, can you?
The Messiah will only be joined to an unspotted bride (the assembly) cleansed from His shed blood, clothed with the garments of the "righteous acts of the saints", which are the commandments of God (Torah).
Rev 19:8 And it was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.
All people can take hold of the covenant through the Torah commandments, for example read Isaiah 56.

the Lord Jesus is typified as the bridegroom... the church is typified as the bride. in ancient times, the groom would approach the father of the bride, and literally pay a price so he may marry her. then the groom would return to his own father's estate or land and prepare a place for he and his soon to be bride. then on a date set by the father of the bride, a procession of the grooms-party would return to the bride's house and shout for her to come out and greet her husband. and they would go to a secluded place and consumate the marriage.
is that not a beautiful figure of the atonement and redemption of the church and the second coming of the Lord?
