Depends on how old the chihuahua is. Most puppies can be easily trained. Put it in a small crate at night. Most dogs will not go potty in the area where they sleep. And actually, use the crate anytime the dog is not be actively supervised. When the dog scratches on the door of the crate because it has to go, open the door and pick the dog up, transporting it outside before setting it down. After you set it on the grass, give the command (go potty or go tinkle or whatever) and then praise the dog up when it does go. Tell it what a good boy/girl it is, make a big deal out of it. It will learn pretty quickly if it is a pup. And remember, little dog, little bladder. You can't expect it to hold it for endless hours.

I got my chihuahua baby when she was 8 wks old and had her 99% trained (very few mishaps) within 2 wks.
it takes lots of consistancy at the beginning (every 15-20 min), paying attention to their body language and lots of treats! she'll need to go right after she wakes up, and soon after she eats as well.
I use the potty pads from walmart. I always tell her to go potty when I put her on it, and she sniffs the scent on the pad and goes. then sits in front of me for a treat. I keep a pad outside my back door and one inside the house, so she has easy access. dogs will sniff the ground with their tail up.. at least chi's do... when they have to go. now when I tell her to "go potty" she'll go to the nearest one and go on her own or whenever she needs to go.
I crate-trained my dog.. which makes it easier too.. I highly suggest that. I used to wake up once at night when she whines, and now only in the morning.. shes my alarm clock, she'll whine when she has to go. Same time every morning.
I never punish her for mishaps, just grab her and put her on the correct spot. When you punish or yell at them, theyll get scared and think what they're doing is wrong and not the place where they're doing it. Just clean it up and kick your own butt for not gettin her out in time. LOL I keep Lysol spray handy!!!
Good luck! be patient! its well worth it!

Do this it works with any dog. Take news paper or paper towels and let the dog wet on them, take them out to the yard where you want him to go potty and place the newspaper or paper towels in the yard and show the dog the spot and let him sniff the area. He will get the idea. Take the dog out every half hour to let him do his business
