I would not reccomend a VG-30DE engine unless you can find a perfect example of the 24 valve engine it is to complex. A regular VG engine was put into the old 200sx back in 1985/6 I think. Stick with a timing belt engine that is known to last a long time and is easier to work on. Like a camaro LS-1 motor. Any motor swap comes with difficulty and if this is your driver get a cheep car to drive while this one is being worked on.

If you can find a 300ZX to use for an engine swap, go with the VG30DE, since there is more power to work with if you decide to go with Forced Induction(Turbo, Twin Turbo), but in terms of popularity, the SR20DE has more that can be done to it, and in terms of ease of an engine swap, the SR20DE will be much easier to swap out. It's really up to you, but the VG30DE will give you more power to begin with, where the SR20DE will need modifying to give you the power of the VG30DE.
