They used to, but why don't they any more?

If they did, it was ages ago.

They decided to go with a "point to point" schedule. So, more smaller planes, flying more routes instead of flying the Big Birds and making people connect.

It was a wise business strategy which worked. Remember that Pan Am's overuse of 747's contributed strongly to its demise in 1991.

747 American Airlines

The 747 is a fuel-guzzling 4 engine aircraft that is less economical to operate than the newer, more fuel-efficient 2-engine 777 model. American Airlines ticket prices would be 20% higher if it flew the 747 on the same routes it uses the 777 now.

Also, my pilot friends say that airlines using the 747 aircraft have a high flight cancellation rate, as the older 747's need more unscheduled maintenance (broken airplanes cant fly).

We had them once, and we only really needed them for the range, not the capacity. Remember that for the most part they were only used on the then 'ultra-long' routes to Tokyo. With the advent of newer technology we moved away from the type - getting rid of the very few that we had and cancelling orders. For the most part, American has not been committed to capacity on flights, but more towards frequency. We never needed an airplane that could carry 400+ seats to Japan, but we did need a plane with that range, and more importantly, something that would not have any ETOPs issues.

I think that they chose the MD-11 over the 747 b/c we had not ETOPs issues and the range was sufficent.

Because the older B747's AA used to fly were the -100 and -200 models. It is alot more economical and efficient to fly a brand new B777-300 on the route that the 747-100 was serving
