Why Do People Think Athiests are cold hearted?

Most likely because they don't know any Atheists. That, and it's so much easier to blindly follow what their pastor tells them than to *gasp!* go out and see for themselves.

For the same reasons they believe we have no morals. They can't get their heads around the idea someone can be a good person without belief in gods. Religion or faith is no measure of morality; religion has no corner on compassion, empathy or kindness. Quite the opposite, in many cases.

I've been a nurse for over 30 years. I''ve been an atheist longer (I went to a Catholic hospital nursing school. Needless to say, it was an interesting trip). I've been accused of being many things, but "cold hearted" was never one of them. I've met many, many more religionists whom I would call cold-hearted, especially when it came to matters of their faith and any challenges to it. Without going into specifics, just look at the histories of Christianity and Islam, then decide who has colder hearts, believers or atheists (and before anyone says it, Hitler was an Austrian Catholic).

I don't know but i don't think that others think all Atheists are cold hearted maybe just some. The same goes for Christians or any other religion. I'm a Christian and I have met several people who call themselves Christian and they were pure evil in my eyes. So i think it really depends on the individual not the belief.

It does seem that cold-hearted, resentful, disenchanted is the way that most atheists are depicted in entertainment, if they're depicted at all. (I'm thinking of shows like "Touched by an Angel", all of which make me retch.)

I guess most people like to entertain their comfortable little fantasies about loving, omnipotent gods watching out for everybody...they like to believe in this so much that anybody who doesn't hold such delusions is considered morally corrupt, pathetic, spiteful, etc.

It's a sad thing, really...it just goes to show you how few people actually have the intellectual stamina to reason instead of blindly accept and believe.

Probably because they feel that most people who believe in something can actually open there hearts to that belief, but and athiest can't open up his or her heart. I used to be one, but then I spent a year in Iraq and survived.

Atheists are people too... some are cold hearted and some aren't. Generally, I think that atheists are very couragous.... it takes alot of courage in my opinion, not to believe in God. Especially when they publicly make it known when they're surrounded by Christians. I also think alot of atheists are pretty smart. They tend to have a really open mind and think intelligently about alot of things.

The old testament preaches that good works are essential in order to get into heaven. Therefore it is believed that the more Christian you are, the more good works you execute.

However the New Testament teaches that we are all sinners, and faith alone will get you into heaven. So the belief that the more Christian you are, the more polite you are is misguided. I am not an atheist, but I will not judge you because the bible tells me not judge unless I am ready to be judged. I just wish more Christians would stop judging.

Most people are cold hearted. Therefore most atheist are cold hearted. It has nothing to do with them not believing in a god.
