for joe c with regards: "in fact one of the worst massacres in history occurred on his watch as captive nato workers stood by helplessly as thousands or muslim boys and men from 12 to 60 were systematically murdered."

The men and boys were taken from the custody of Dutch U.N. troops, not N.A.T.O, by very heavily armed Serbian soldiers with tanks and A.P.C.

The Dutch were armed only with personnel weapons, pistols and rifles, no anti-armor weapons, no air support.

The boys and men were NOT executed in front of the U.N. troops but removed away from the area either on foot or by bus, where they were murdered in cold blood, in recent years their mass graves have been discovered and the victims DNA profiled, some of the victims have yet to be found.

As a U.N. veteran from service in South Lebanon, I believe the Dutch could have offered more resistance before caving into the threats made against them by the Serbs, but this is the downside to a U.N. force, that is there primarily as a Peace-keeping mission and not as a Peace-enforcing mission.

Milosevic, was guilty, as well as his buddies and all will pay the ultimate price for their atrocities, it has to be remembered that Serbia was always fermenting violence in the Balkans and was ultimately responsible for "the shot that was heard around the world" (WW1) when Serbian Black Hand Terrorist, (a group formed and ran by Serbian Military Officers) trained equipped and dispatched the assassination team to kill the nephew of the Emperor of Austria, Franz Josef in Sarajevo prior to WW1.

mostly muslims this was a major precursor to the animosity between the islamic extremists and america since we stood by and did nothing to stop the carnage, the clinton administration had made promises to end the killing of helpless muslim civilians but fell far short of making good on that commitment.in fact one of the worst massacres in history occurred on his watch as captive nato workers stood by helplessly as thousands or muslim boys and men from 12 to 60 were systematically murdered.
this debacle has been repeatedly used as a rallying point for extremists to garner hatred and distrust for the u.s. and the west in general. this sad series of events led to the trade center bombings which pale by comparison in retrospect.
