Or do they have completely different functions?
Will the picture/audio quality of a HDTV be better with both a HDMI and Component cables?

Yep and nope

Yep... If you get one of them there HDMI cables you be lookin at Tee Vee a lot better than now.

Nope your dang Tee Vee won't be usen but one of them cables at ant one time. So it be one or another not bein both.

The video quality using good component cables will be the same.

But HDMI carries both video and audio and is cheaper. Also - plugging in both sometimes triggers copy protection issues and drops the component outputs to standard video levels.

So use one or the other, and HDMI is recommended.
