Depends where you are serving the time. Jail is usually a maximum of 12 months. But depending upon time served before sentence, good time, space considerations and general policy, it will probably be less. A good rule of thumb is 3/4 or the sentence is what you can expect to serve. But the recent rash of teenybopper chick idols going to jail should tell you that nothing is written in stone. The warden can actually release a prisoner anytime for what he or she considers to be cause and GENERALLY will not be questioned. The prisioner is remanded to the care and custody of the department of corrections. What happens after that is up to that department and it's administrative procedures.

In scotland & uk its half remission for 4 years & under so 12 months would be 6, as long as the prisoner behaves in jail.

DEPENDS ON THE SENTENCE. 1 YEAR IS EQUAL TO 12 MONTHS.
BUT IF GOOD TIME IS GRANTED BY THE JUDGE AND / OR CREDIT FOR TIME SERVED, THEN IT COULD BE CALCULATED LESS THEN A YEAR.

In California, you get good time credits. For every two days, you get one day good time credit, so you only do 2/3rds of your time. For one year, that's 8 months.
Once you get to prison, you do half time, so, for every one day, you get one day of good time credit.
In both places, you can lose the good time credit for bad behavior. In prison, you are supposed to have a job to get good time credit, but their are exceptions. So not everyone gets good time credit in prison. In jail, you get good time credit automatically.
