So 5-6 years ago, I got arrested for a misdemeanor which was pety theft. And of course I have a criminal record due to that incident. How would I go about sealing my criminal record? What kind of procedure would I need to go through? Thanks so much!

I was 21 when it happened. Now I'm 26. And it happened in the state of California (where I live).

And I only got a fine. No jail time.

Maybe you could make an appointment to talk with an Attorney about this problem?? Do you have a Legal Aid Office nearby?? I was wondering re name change??? If you were very young when you were arrested then maybe that isn't so bad but get some legal advice.

You want to request a pardon. I would search Service Canada's website to see if you can find the appropriate information and/or call the 1-800-OH-CANADA number on Monday. It really works! A human being answers the phone and sends you to the appropriate department.

Here's the link to the Pardon website:

There are lots of agencies out there willing to 'help' you apply for a pardon - for a cost. The website makes it clear that whether you do the application yourself or if a lawyer does it, they are given the same weight. If you had a more substantial criminal history or if you felt that the form and process were too confusing, then I might recommend spending the money to ensure the process is followed properly. You have to evaluate your own situation and then look at the cost versus the cost of making errors on the application which might lead to delays and/or denials. If you feel that you understand the process and forms, then maybe get a trusted friend or family member to proof-read the form. I suggest this because this is one of those instances where you want to be as transparent as possible and clarity and accuracy are crucial for success.

If you don't meet the criteria to receive a pardon, you could consider consulting a lawyer, but I'm optimistic that with what you've shared, you should qualify.

Best of luck and share good news!

Hmm, depends, if you are a minor, then it would or should be sealed, but if you're an adult, you would have to talk to a judge, but yeah, get a lawyer, they should be able to help you out.To seal your records, you must petition the district court of the district in which arrest and criminal records information pertaining to you are located. Check with your local courthouse for the appropriate petition forms

it depends on the law in your state but you would have to ask a lawyer or judge and ask them if it can be sealed usually you will have to pay off any fines you may have and pay to have it sealed but even though its sealed employers, banks etc can still see what is on that record even though it is sealed. some states you have to ask for a pardon from the govenor of that state to seal the records. look up sealing criminal records in cali or expunging my criminal record in cali.also any law enforcement agencies can still see these charges once they are sealed, so basically others can still see the charges(if youre trying to get a loan,a job, etc)also if you ever marked on a job application where they asked if youve ever been committed of a crime if you put no on the application even though you have they can refuse to seal the record due to that also

THE COURT SEALS THE RECORD BY A JUDGES ORDER. CRIMINAL FILES ARE ALWAYS OPENED AS A MATTER OF PUBLIC RECORD AND THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 1973.
