The hateful, bigoted, sexist teachings of a guy who wasn't even there when any of the events were suppose to have happened (Paul)?

Searcher: Well said, and your opinion is respected; However, I do not agree that his teachings are at all relevant to us now, especially in light of the teachings of love and tolerance from his predacessors. You obviously have a sharp mind, keep using it and it will serve you well. *bows*

I think Christ challenged the traditional society of His time by treating women as equals and associating with people seen as "second class". While Paul may have had his conversion on the road to Damascus, I think he was uncomfortable with the challenge to society and did his best to "fix" it. Since most people don't like the status quo upset, they like to quote Paul.

Well, because first of all, Paul taught from the cultural perspective where women had no value other than as breeders for children. Women in those days were not taught to read, so the idea of a woman being able to lead a man was preposterous in his opinion.

But, I do like Paul's teachings where he shows us how to give thanks in all things. Paul spent a lot of his time beaten, in chains, and imprisoned. Paul will be the first to tell you that he was not perfect and that he made mistakes (he murdered Christians before he was converted). So, I agree that Paul was sexist in his treatment of women, because it was cultural. But I also find that most of his teachings are still relevant for today, espcially in how we are to think and behave.

I don't find Paul to be sexist at all and I'm a woman. I don't know where you get hateful or bigoted from since he promoted the idea that all human beings were loved by God and thus deserved salvation. Many before him felt that only God's chosen fell in that catagory....so don't know what you are talking about.

I'm thinking that you haven't read the Bible in it's entirety or studied Paul in context. You are probably pulling passages out and trying to make a point with one line. You can make anyone look horrible if you focus on bits and pieces of what they say. Anyone.

Jesus & Paul are not at odds with each other. Your misgivings about Paul doubtless describe your personal reaction to Paul's teaching on gender issues, but you are projecting into those teachings a hatred that simply was not there. Christianity, even as Christ taught it, recognizes much in traditional gender roles that you would probably consider hateful. For example, Jesus taught that the marriage paradigm as God designed it entailed one man, united to one woman, for life. As for Paul, he did have a personal encounter with Jesus, and his ministry and message were approved by the original Apostles. The Apostle Peter even equated Paul’s writings with inspired Scripture. Therefore, your disgruntlement should be aimed at the true originator of the teachings you find so repellant .... the living God.

Yes, St. Paul WAS hateful, bigoted, and sexist. ALL BEFORE his encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus. He hunted and even aided in the execution of Christians. But after his encounter he was changed and became one of the greatest Christians. The teachings he professed were not His but those of Jesus.

Probably because the Apostle Paul who wrote...

1 Corinthians 13:1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.

..and..

Colossians 3:11 Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all.

...and...

Galatians 3:27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

...wasn't any of those things that you slanderously accuse him of being.

God hates sin.

Jesus chose Paul to spread the gospel.

What do you think the gospel is?
