No, it's a man made illusion. To each is own. Yes it's grand because so many have it. Does it really matter, if it is, or isn't? Spirit-religion=Spirit. Religion-spirit=Religion. Oh God, where did the spirit go?
Bottomline, with or without it, the whole point is not to hurt anyone. Give and receive, recieve and Give.
Our perception is the illusion.

Religion is not faith, so I would say some are. But as far as the rest of them, it is only an illusion to those who do not believe in God.

It is difficult to find the religion that God is actually in.
In previous times God parted the sea, caused the sky to become dark. Then Jesus came and healed the sick and told us the rich religious leaders were not doing his will.
Pharisees and sadduccees were more interested in their own power and prestigue.
Today we have the bible, but so many different religions.
So we have to rely on what Jesus said, "test them by their fruits? What are the religious organizations doing today?
Which ones do you think are actually doing God's will?
What happened in previous times? Why did God destroy them before?
Before the flood he said the earth was ruined because it was full of violence because of humans. He doesn't like that.
Sodom and Gamorrah was immoral and wanted to have sex with men angels. So he doesn't like that.
What about love? What about caring? Who tries to preach about God's kingdom as the only solution for mankind?
Who says a loving God wouldn't keep someone alive just to torture him? Death is the end of everything for wicked people. There is a God, you just have to look for him.

...and believing we descended from rocks is not?
George Whitefield, of the Great Awakening, started a string of orphanages down the Atlantic Coast of the U.S. in the 1700's. He was all talk AND all action.
There's no illusion there, just faith put into practice, the purest form of religion.

I will have to say yes it is, it divides rather than unifies, it hates rather than loves, it judges rather than solves and its probably is what is going to be the true end of the world; some huge religious war to end them all....there have been many ----they just have yet to suceed, but one day it will and total genocide of some sort will happen and all those people of whatever religion will be left and instead of standing there saying we were victorious and god or whatever will reward us, they will more than likely be standing there going........holy crap what did we do.......nothing changed and we killed everyone for what? ....... imagine the one thing that religion has been trying to stop is what it has been creating for 2000 or more years.........pretty much the grand daddy of illusion.

..."religion" is mans attempt to reach up to God. God is smart enough to know that "we" can not accomplish that, so He made a Way that "we" can righteously connect directly with Him without "religion"... It's simple if "we" follow the Scripture and not the "religious" dogmas, doctrines and traditions of humans... (there are only a very few Churches that understand the Scriptures and have "de-dogma'd" "de-doctrined" and "de-triditionalized" all the "Blah-Balh, honk-honk of the "religions" that have all the spiritual gymnastics in order to attempt to reach God thru their nonsense.

I think this question needs to be more detailed on what kind of answer you want. But some of the best minds believed in god such as Leonardo Da Vinici, Darwin, Einstein, Steven Hawking etc.

If faith is an illusion that gives hope, joy, happiness-a sense of belonging-and positive views of mankind-what harm would there be in such an illusion? God is real!

Yes. You are only saved by Jesus' gift. You can't earn it by doing good and avoiding evil. Those things are religion.
