Why does a dog produce milk for a kitten?

My 11 month old retriever started to lactate for our new kitten. Why did she do this? And how long will she do this?

Guess she's feeling motherly...

She'll do it until the kitten is ok on his own, eating kitty chow.

it started lactating because the kitten was sucking on its nipple.
a mmother will do that if there is a constant rubbing or sucking.
its not harmful in any way and will stop as soon as the kitten stops sucking.
