A pet shop is not a good place to get a Golden at all. They are puppy mill dog which mean they are very poorly bred and prone to many health problems. Temperament is not guaranteed at all.
You need to look around some more for a good breeder in your area. One that will guarntee the health of the pup and one that you will be able to see both mom and dad. One that does alll the proper health testing on both dogs before they even decided to mate them to have the pups.
If your looking for a older Golden then perhaps you should look into a rescue near you. They can find you a older pup or even a young adult for you to consider.
I dont know where you live but just type Golden Retriever rescue and your area into the search box and see where a rescue close to you may be.

As far as barking that something you have to train the dog not to do it doesn't come that way also with being nice to people. Thats part of your job as the owner to have your dog enrolled in obedience classes. A Good golden a well bred Golden and every Golden needs training to be a good canine citizen.

Good luck with your search..

Add: a very well bred Golden should be near or over $1000 dollars. $600 dollars is very cheap and I'd really wonder how well bred that Golden really is.

Others have told you not to buy from a pet store already, so I'll skip that warning. There will also be breeders who will try to sell you golden retriever pups for $400 or $600. Don't think "wow, great deal" and buy it. These are most likely irresponsible breeders whose pups will end up having more health problems than a $1000 puppy. You think you're getting a great deal by spending $400 on the pup, but later you end up spending $2000 on vet bills that you wouldn't have had with the $1000 pup.

Here are some ways to differentiate a responsible breeder from an irresponsible one:

http://info.tovik.com/breeder.htm

And here is a link on some questions to ask your breeder when you meet him, that will help determine whether he knows his stuff or not:

http://www.newcastleboxers.com/breederquestions.shtml

As for your dog not barking a lot and being nice with people, that is entirely up to YOU. Train your dog well and he will be quiet and friendly; if you don't train him, he will make a racket and be aggressive.

I'll also attach two links to e-books provided free by very good trainers.

http://www.openpaw.org/PDFs/BEFORE_YouGetYourPuppy.pdf
http://www.petexpertise.com/dog-training-free-ebook.htm

Be sure to do your research! This dog's health and his behaviour are in your hands. If you don't do your research now and end up with an aggressive dog later...that will be your fault. So spare yourself the trouble and read up.

You might be able to get by for $1500-2000. You would be better off looking for a dog through a reputable breeder then a pet store.

Well how about checking out rescues?
You can look at www.petfinders.com or
wwwpets911.com

You could get a retriever for a fraction of the price.
You might find a dog here:
http://www.grca-nrc.org/ and there are multi state rescue transports to help rescued breed specific dogs like from this group to get from other states to a new forever home like yours.

I am doing one such transport next week that is going from Abilene Texas to Flagstaff Arizona (I am only doing one 70 mile leg). for an Anatolian Shephard National Rescue Group.

Now another thing you might consider doing is raising retriever puppies for therapy dog training (kinda like blind dog training) if you go here:
http://www.azgrc.org/Site_Map.htm since I dont know where you are from you can see how to foster a dog which would be for free and that really helps.

You also can go to the link page listed below for more sources as well!

Find a local breeder! Do not get one from a pet shop. They charge too much and the dogs are usually sick, BUT you won't find out until after you buy the dog and take he/she to the vet! Pet shops puppies are usually sleeping in your urine and poop until a employee finds the time to clean the cages/cases!! Depending on the breeder you can range in price from $450 and up! I bought my Golden from a reputable breeders and was only $250 for males and $275 for females! My pup came along with shots no papers but that isn't important if you are not breeding him/her! All Golden's are friendly to everyone, even other dogs! You won't find a Golden that doesn't bark a lot....Golden's have tons of energy and need attention and exercise daily!! Oh...and you don't exercise Golden's daily they will be destructive....shoes,towels,paper,pencils YEP you guessed it...they will CHEW ON anything they can find. With so much energy they are HYPER until they reach 3 yrs of age they will start to mellow out! Overall, Golden's are GREAT dogs! Very Loyal,Obedient,SMART....they definitely keep you on your toes!

Note: Yes my Golden was "cheap" BUT has no health problems! He gets a clean bill of health every time we go to the vet!! The Golden breeder that I found as you see; didn't care about the money if they did they would've have priced their Golden's as high as $900+ They cared more about placing the pups in good homes! I would never pay $1000 for a Golden Ret.

There's plenty wrong with getting a dog from a pet shop. They get their dogs from puppy farms, where puppies are basically a business, and are manufactured by people who don't really care about the dogs.

You will probably get a dog with alot of health problems (lots of inbreeding in puppy mills) and you'll be supporting a really terrible practice.

Why do you want a pure bred (proper spelling) Golden Retriever?

Look in your area for Golden rescues or see a shelter, you could find a lovely Golden mix.

Most pet shops get their animals from puppy mills. Not only are they usually full of health problems due to the fact that the breeder is just in it for the money but you are also not going to be sure about the dogs temperment. Check the dogs out at your local shelter. You will be amazed at the number of purebred dogs just waiting for a loving home.

To answer your question about what a breeder is, and for info on goldens, check out this site. You can even do a breeder search and find a good breeder near you. The money you will spend up front to buy the puppy is worth it. A reputable breeder will guarantee their dogs, often for two years! Good luck!

first thing is to find out as much as u can about the parents as u can. Hip dysplasia is very common in retrievers. The next thing is to find out if the pet store offers to pay for the first vet check and what their policy is on refunds if the dog should be sick or dies within 15 to 30 days due to illness. This breed can be pricy though it depends on the area in which u live. Roughly around $350 to 600 with papers and 200 and less without papers.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://tr.im/OlhCJ

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.
