Nothing to be afraid of... Hell is not even currently a real place. We also have neither a spirit nor a soul -- in the spiritual sense. We *are* a living soul -- we don't *have* one (Gen. 2:7; 1Cor. 15:45). The Bible formula for a living soul:

Dust of the Ground + Breath of Life = A Living Soul

We also don't *have* the spiritual concept of a "spirit." The word "rûach" translated in the Bible into the English word "spirit" (Eccl 12:7) is referring to the Breath of Life given to us by God.

H7307 (רוּח) rûach (roo'-akh)
From H7306; wind; by resemblance breath, that is, a sensible (or even violent) exhalation;

H7306 (רוּח) rûach (roo'-akh)
A primitive root; properly to blow, that is, breathe;

Without the Breath, we are just plain dead -- back to the Dust of the Ground (Gen. 3:19; Psalms 104:29). The Bible formula for death:

A Living Soul - Breath of Life = Dust of the Ground

Jesus does promise us an after-life, though. For more Bible information on this topic, see the following reference materials.

It depends. I am a Christian, so I believe that followers of Jesus go to heaven, while those who think they can please God without the help of Jesus will have the opportunity to find out if that works. Atheists, by the way, don't even have darkness to look forward to. Experiencing darkness implies perception, and if the dead are absolutely gone, they don't even know they're gone. Just one day you're changing a light bulb and then ... well, there's no word for the nothing you're not even aware of. The best thing to consider when weighing these options is to find out whether anyone ever really made it back from absolute, final death (no, comas don't count), and see what they say. Personally, I'm betting my whole stack of chips on Jesus, because that's exactly what He did.

i believe that this is what happens during a peaceful death?: you lie in bed for weeks, eating less, making preparations for death, then you start to lose senses, like sight, but you can still hear. then at the moment of death, someone comes down to earth to come get you, whether it be a deceased family member, or an angel. then take you from your fleshy prison (i couldnt think of another word) and then once your soul is on its way, the second it leaves you physical body dies. i am catholic and my grandma died 2 months ago, and another family member on my moms side passed away a few years ago. this is all the real life information i have experienced about family dying and going to heaven. every single thing i wrote here really happened. god bless you.

The Bible tells us that there is not only life after death, but eternal life so glorious that “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9). Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, came to the earth to give us this gift of eternal life. “He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5).

Jesus took on the punishment that each of us deserves and sacrificed His very life. Three days later, He proved Himself victorious over death by rising from the grave, in Spirit and in flesh. He remained on the earth for forty days and was witnessed by thousands before rising to His eternal home in heaven. Romans 4:25 says, “He was handed over to die because of our sins, and he was raised from the dead to make us right with God.”

Jesus called death "sleep". In that context, when a person dies, just as when you sleep, his thoughts perish. He knows nothing about what is going on around him. He will have nothing to do or say about anything until he is awakened at the return of Jesus.
I, myself, looked up every passage concerning death, dying, dead, grave and sleep. I used a Strong's Exhaustive Concordance for the King James version of the Bible. I would find the sentence with one of these words in it and if I couldn't get a clear understanding of what I was reading, I would read the whole paragraph or even chapter. That way, I know what the bible says about death. Until you have researched death this way for yourself, you will be just like those in the dark ages. You will believe whatever your priest, pastor, friend or enemy has to say because you don't look yourself and seek the truth. Jesus said, "17 ¶ Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth."(John 17:17)
The Apostle Paul said to Timothy, "15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."(2 Tim 2:15)

So! Look these things up for yourself. Ask God for His help in understanding His word. Pray always before studying for the Holy Spirit to inspire you and give you wisdom and understanding. Do not put your trust in man. You will be deceived.

As an Ultimate Believer (one who believes in all religious faiths) I believe in both reincarnation and the existence of Heaven. I believe that you will be reincarnated until you have fulfilled your destiny or reason for being put on Earth by God. I also believe that Heaven is a place where your soul is merged with God's and you live with Him/Her for all eternity. This is a far greater bliss then any earthly pleasure. Do not worry about death because Heaven is a release from the sufferings of life. God bless.

It is like when a hurricane breaks up. You cannot find a center.
People may remember the name and the experiences.

Each of us is a force of nature and our lives mean something to someone. We weave a web that ultimately touches everyone.
When we are gone we are still there in the web.
When we hear someone tell the truth, we say it rings true.
It rings true for the living and the dead.

Where are the dead?

Gen. 3:19: “In the sweat of your face you will eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For dust you are and to dust you will return.”

Eccl. 9:10: “All that your hand finds to do, do with your very power, for there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in Sheol [“the grave,” KJ, Kx; “the world of the dead,” TEV], the place to which you are going.”

What is the condition of the dead?

Eccl. 9:5: “The living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all.”

Ps. 146:4: “His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground; in that day his thoughts [“thoughts,” KJ, 145:4 in Dy; “all his thinking,” NE; “plans,” RS, NAB] do perish.”

John 11:11-14: “‘Lazarus our friend has gone to rest, but I am journeying there to awaken him from sleep.’ . . . Jesus said to them outspokenly: ‘Lazarus has died.’” (Also Psalm 13:3)

Is there some part of man that lives on when the body dies?

Ezek. 18:4: “The soul [“soul,” RS, NE, KJ, Dy, Kx; “man,” JB; “person,” TEV] that is sinning—it itself will die.”

Isa. 53:12: “He poured out his soul [“soul,” RS, KJ, Dy; “life,” TEV; “himself,” JB, Kx, NAB] to the very death.” (Compare Matthew 26:38.)

When you die, you do not exsist anymore. Your only hope for the future is the resurection that the Bible talks about that includes resurection to a paradise earth.

I believe you go to sleep until Jesus comes back and resurrects us. New Jerusalem comes down to the new earth and we all live in paradise.
