its a grade piont average

in school you get a certain number of points for every grade
A=4 pionts
B=3 points
C=2 points
D=1 point
F=0 points
then they average them and that is your GPA
so a 3.5 means you got half of your grades are As and half are Bs

the highest you can get without taking AP classes is a 4.00
but if you take AP classes, you get an extra .05 for every class

it helps you get into college cause it says how good your grades are

+ and- do not help your GPA (so you get 4 points wether you have an A+ or and A-)

and to the person who gave me that thumbs down....a curse apon your family

Ok, everyone's yelled at you for not knowing what it is...so now you know...but no one explained how it really works. USUALLY it's a scale from 0-4. Basically, let's say we're looking at your report card/transcript.

An A = 4 points
B = 3 points
C = 2 points
D = 1 point
E/F = 0 points

So, every grade you get will also be worth a certain number of points. These points are added up, and divided by the total number of grades (the average). If you had all A's, your GPA would be a 4.0. Let's pretend you don't though.

Let's say for one term you have 2 A's, 3 B's, and a C.

A = 4
A = 4
B = 3
B = 3
B = 3
C = 2
C = 2
_________+
21 total points

21 divided by 7 = 3

Your GPA is 3.0 for that term.

My college always figured out the GPA for each term, and also the GPA for your whole college career (called a Cumulative GPA). I think Canada has a different system, but in the US it definitely helps you get into a better school. Also, it's monitored throughout college...if you have a low GPA you may be on Academic probation, not allowed to play sports, etc... Your GPA can also help determine what kind of scholarships you get.

Basically, it's a quick way to understand a student's grades. If you're the one with the 3.5 GPA, that's pretty good! By telling me just that one little number, I go "Oh, ok...good student academically..."

I hope that helps :-D

Grade Point Average, it's a measurement of a student's performance in school based on their letter grades (A through F).

In general, points are assigned to different assignments, quizzes, tests, etc. in school. The final points earned by the student are divided by the total number of points possible, resulting in a percentage grade, which is then converted to a letter grade:

90-100%: A
80-89%: B
70-79%: C
60-69%: D
59 or lower: F (sometimes E)

The letter grades are then given a particular number of points:

A: 4
B: 3
C: 2
D: 1
E/F: 0

These points may differ for honors classes. Also, colleges further break down the points based on plusses and minuses (A+, A, and A- will have different allocated points).

The points that correspond with a students letter grade are then added together and divided by the number of classes or credits that the student took, resulting in their grade point average (or GPA).

It's a Grade Point Average.

It's based on a 4.0 scale

At its most basic
A equals 4 points
B equals 3
C equals 2
D equals 1
F equals 0

You average your grades and get your GPA. 3.5 is actually not half bad. Preety good really.

The higher the GPA the better your chances are of getting into University.

However, I only know this from the American educational grading system. I don't know if Canada grades students on the ABCDF scale.

A= 90% to 100% and are given a value of 4.
B= 80% - 89% and given a value of 3.
C= 70% - 79% and given a value of 2....so on and so forth.

Now if you had 3 grades of A, A, B those equate to values of 4, 4, and 3 which add to be 11 divided by 3 which equals:
3.67 GPA

A GPA is like your grade in a class but for your entire high school career, except in a class you can get a number between 0 and 100 while in a GPA you get a number between 0 and 4.0.

My Best Regards.

Grade Point Average
I don't know if Canadian universities work the same way as US universities, but a 3.5 is pretty damn good (4.0 being the highest)
