If speaking in tongues is a heavenly language....then why, when the 12 disciples got the gift of tongues others were able to understand them??

Acts 2:6-8

When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language?

How is it that each disciple spoke A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE that others could speak to them in?? It's not some Heavenly language...it's the gift to be able to speak to others in their language for the purpose of spreading God's word.

Do you understand speaking in tongues is not something to be taken lightly by faking it, babbling and rolling on the floor for no one to translate....that's not the Holy Spirit...that's great acting.

I'm sorry that things haven't turned out great for you in life, but things will eventually get better with time, as all things do. So don't loose hope for better days because they'll come sooner than you think.

Sunset, it is a rare but beautiful thing to see!

Now adays God's word is basically everywhere so people of the same tongue can talk to each other....but I think if we sent more missionaries (not the ones who pass out food or build homes) we would see more of the tongues....

That's just my opinion though and I may be wrong.

It's not the holy spirit, it's a self induced hysteria, and can be dangerous on many levels.....

I have never seen in the Bible where speaking in tongues is called a heavenly language? I do agree that speaking in tongues is when the speaker uses a known language that is not the language of the speaker, and there should be someone present who can interpret the language being spoken. At the same time I believe in praying in an unknown language or tongue that the Spirit uses to communicate with God. This is what is mentioned in Romans 8:26 and confirmed in 1 Corinthians 14:14 and 14:28. If one prays in an unknown language or tongue let it be between him and God.

I used to think that people praying in tongues for me meant they were saying the "perfect prayer" for me. Whatever they prayed...my life turned out HORRIBLE. I agree with you that what they talked about at Pentecost was not the same as what people do in Charismatic or Pentecostal churches. I know that they say there's always somebody there to interpret..but I don't think those interpreters are from other countries...hearing their own language. They might have a spirit speaking thru them (both of them)...but I'm not sure it's the Holy Spirit. And I sure hope I'm not sinning against the Holy Spirit by saying that.

What you are speaking of is 2 different things. The gift of the HG "is" where people have spoken languages of men unknown to them and been understood. But the reception of the HG is between a person/God. It says in the Bible that one can be speaking in the tongues of men or angels. It isn't fanatical or out of order. God is always a gentleman. It is a joyful, peaceful, uplifting experience. It is to give you boldness and to make you a powerful witness for God. Having the HG is the birth of the spirit. That's why its an essential part of salvation. God Bless You! See upci.org for more info.

Paul said that he could speak in tongues of men and tongues of angels. The problem is there may be two kinds of tongues and the church has not handled it correctly.

I Corinthians 13:1
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

In this verse Paul is saying that tongues aren't as important as everyone in the first century church was making it look. Charity is the greatest gift to have. Tongues is #8 on the list of spiritual gifts.

Amen

1 Corinthians 14:19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

1 Corinthians 14:26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.

1 Corinthians 14:27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.

Matthew 7:21 ¶ Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

They are two different things.
Speaking in tongues which is referred to speaking in Heavenly language is different from the gift of speaking in tongues that the disciples got in Acts 2. The latter is: for instance, like: I cannot speak German, but when I speak "in tongues" those who understand only German can understand me.

I generally concur, though there are outburst of exuberant joy that do happen spontaneously, that no one less than a totally sincere, and insightful person could understand, just listen to a child play with spontaneous joy.

Most modern church led versions are usually faking it, yes, but trying to be more child like in purity is a good thing, but if its done for show it's less than worthless, its hindering.

There are two ends to every line...

God bless.

Paul said I speak in tongues more than ye all and with the understanding also

I was taught the same thing in a Baptist Church until I read it for myself and understood it for myself and God led me out into deep waters where I could learn the truth
it is real and it is for today, you miss God without it

Speaking "in tongues" means speaking in a different language, bearing a message that can be interpreted by someone else who is present.
It certainly does not mean babbling nonsense.
