Yes it is worth it to buy the 80GB PS3 over the 40GB PS3 because the 80GB PS3 has backward compatibility with both PS1 and PS2 games, it has 2 USB ports, and it has the digital camera flash card slots.
The 40GB PS3 on the other hand can play PS1 games, but it can't play PS2 games and has 2 USB ports, but it doesn't have the digital camera flash card slots.

yeh mate there are many diffrences like the 80gb has backward compatibility with ps2 games , where as the 40gb does not
the 40gb does not have flash card readers(witch means you can not put memory cards out of ur camera into the ps3), where as the 80gb can, and yeh more hard drive space in 80gb but if you dont care about the other things you can up grade the hard drive in the 40gb i bought a 60gb and now i have a 300gb hard drive in it!

The 80 gb has backward compatibility for PS2 games, while the 40 gb cannot and will not play PS2 games. If you must play PS2 games on your PS3, you'll have to get the 80 gb (better if you can find the 60 gb).
The 80 gb also comes with Motorstorm, while the 40 gb comes with Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray disk (the movie, not the game).
