Some may be tempted to say the law, but the law serves to expose sin and make it utterly sinful.

You might want to look to Adam and Eve, and even the devil to find an answer. What was the basis of their sins?

Unbelief...they thought that they, not God, knew what was best for them.

Original sin wasn't much of a sin at all. God gave Adam and Eve free will. God would have allowed them to live forever in paradise, but with absolutely no understanding of right and wrong. What good is a paradise if you do not know what "good" is?

All that God commanded was that they could eat from any tree of the garden but not eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil or they would surely die.

Second of all. Eve would not have recognized the serpent as evil, Adam wouldn't have either. The serpent was a creation of God and wasn't even cursed until the serpent had disobeyed God ( by supposedly deceiving Eve).

Why would God even make the tree of knowledge of good and evil if He hadn't wanted them to choose a lifetime of knowledge over an eternity of ignorance?

The basis of all sin is going against the will of God.

We all know right from wrong. We are accountable for our wrong doings. We know right from wrong! We know what makes us guilty. There are consequences for our transgressions. God makes us feel that guilt.

God is active in our lives. Our lives are blessed to know Him. Apart from Him, there are no blessings.

I see many good answers here. But I'm a little to late to offer mine. The basis of all sin is pride.
Adam and Eve thought that they could be better than God. They wanted God to respect them as higher people. Pride. Selfishness and disobedience and the desire to be God all comes from pride. Kill your pride

Disobedience -
The serpent tempts Eve into eating the forbidden fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, and she gives the fruit to Adam, too. God expels them both from the Garden of Eden and curses them.

Adam and Eve were sinless for a time. I don't know how long. Satan was sin, he did it to himself. He rebelled, and one third of Heaven with him. What Satan, Adam, and Eve did was choose wrong. Satan with pride, Eve by being corruptible, and Adam because he chose to do what was wrong.

Religion is the basis of sin. Religion found a way to make perfectly normal human behaviour abnormal, and to gain by making people feel guilty about it.
The concept of sin is nothing more than a way for religious organisations to dominate & dictate the actions of it's followers.

Selfishness is the basis for all sin. Sin results when the wrong choice is made whether to believe God's Word or not.

James 4:17 "Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin."

Lucifer knew that God was Good; but he was jealous, out of his own selfishness, of the position of pre-incarnate Jesus as being next to God the Father. He was also angry at God the Father for giving The Son a higher position than he, the Covering Cherub, was given. He selfishly reasoned that he was most deserving of the position next to God. Then, because he was angry at God, he selfishly reasoned that he should replace God because he, Lucifer, certainly knew better as to whom deserved what positions in the Universe.

Eve knew the good choice was to believe God's Word both when He said not to eat of it and when He said the result would be death. But, she selfishly desired to sample what was forbidden and she desired to be like God -- knowing good from evil.

Adam knew the good choice was to remain faithful to God's Word even though it meant he would lose Eve. But, he first selfishly desired not to lose his wife, Eve. So, he then selfishly reasoned that God would not kill them both if he also ate the fruit.

Disobedience is the basis of sin. If we didn't disobey God we wouldn't have sin.

The basis of sin is Man's choosing to do wrong versus right. Each of us has free will and the ability to choose.

The basis of all sin is doing something entirely wrong, and deep down inside you know this, but you do it anyway. I believe it is as simple as that.

What Adam and Eve did that's where it all began. Original Sin can't escape it.
