Some people derive a great deal of conceit from their ancestral lineage, and upon following the prescribed forms of family organization, especially marriage and parenthood. For these people, anyone who is born to parents who are not married annoys their strict feelings, and is regarded as a product of a sinful act. These people are full of sh*t, but they exist in great numbers. However, the word bastard is nowadays used so freely that it has lost much of its impact. I give it a 5.

If used in a derogatory way, it is a 9. It can be very offensive to someone. If used in an academic and informative way, it is a 1.
There are so many words that have different connotations depending on their use. I simply choose to never use words that can be misconstrued as being offensive and used to possibly hurt someone's feelings.

That word badmouths the mother; implying loose morals since it means she had a child out of wedlock. Also bringing into question her ability to impart those morals to a child since she is presumed to be lacking in that area. I`d rate it 3.

it was once a name of distinction --- the bastard son (usually) of a potentate ---- so really its meaningless as far as an expletive --- it was very recently used as a term of mateship so it depends on the culture as well ----- enjoy

In England I'd say it's maybe 8 or more. You wouldn't say it to your boss' face that's for sure.
