Be very careful when you do kitchen cabinets. The areas where you touch them to open the cabinets will have a collection of oils from the skin that need to be removed before the new finish (either paint or stain) will adhere and dry properly. Do it right the first time and it will be a great improvement.

It depends on what on them now. If its paint, painting over them is easiest. If its stain and you want to change color or paint it then you need to strip it first, that's a lot of work. If its stain and you want to keep it the same color, do some tests in a hidden location(inside the cabinet) to find the match. This would be the easiest.

Same difference if you get a stain with a gloss mixed in already. Just depends on the look you're going for.

If they are unfinished it's easier to stain and finish it....painting it you may have to fill in gaps...especially if you are painting them white....white shows every gap in every joint.
