1.25 oz. shots: 32
1 oz. shots: 40

According to Wikipedia,

In the US:
Single shot glass-- 1 fluid oz. ≈ 30 mL or 1.5 fluid oz. ≈ 45 mL[2]
Double shot glass-- 2.0 fluid oz. ≈ 60 mL[3]


In the United Kingdom:
Single -- 25 or 35 mL
Double -- 50 or 70 mL

Some old fashioned shot glasses hold as much as 3oz if you fill them to the brim (not that you should do that, unless you want to spill good whiskey). Others, the "short shot" glasses, really only hold an ounce. If you want to check your shot glasses, or make sure you pour a certain sized shot:

one fluid ounce = two level tablespoons = six level teaspoons

So if you pour liberally, pour into a larger glass, or have friends who are used to a "generous shot" (1.5 oz) or double shot (2 oz)...you may get as few as 20-30 shots from a 40 oz. bottle.
