Is the bass clarinet a good scholarship instrument? I'm kind of in a bind with money, and any little scholarship would help me. There is another instrument owned by the school that's bigger and more rare than the bass clarinet. I don't remember waht it's called, but it's bigger and more expensive than a bass clarinet. Would this bigger instrument be better for a scholarship? I'm a freshman, and I have a chance to switch. Should I?

Bass clarinet isn't a major at most colleges so getting a music major scholarship isn't very likely unless you also play soprano very well. If you plan to be a college music major then you'll have to keep your soprano chops up too (or double on sax).

Some colleges have a major called "woodwinds"; in these, being a big clarinet player can be an advantage for some scholarships if you also play sax.

Playing bass very well can help you get a seat in some ensembles much easier than playing soprano. There are orchestral bass clarinet seats that don't get a lot of competition.

The bigger clarinets are the EEb Contra-alto and the BBb contra-bass. These are also not major instruments but in many colleges a good player can be very hard to find.

If you want to be of greatest value to a band program, learn to play the entire family of clarinets very well. When you can offer the band versatility then you are more likely to be offered some funding. It also wouldn't hurt to also learn to play the sax family and the flute. If you're going to specialize on big clarinets, learning bari sax and bassoon can make you incredibly valuable.

I have gotten many seats over the years because I was the only one available that can really play the contra clarinet (as opposed to soprano players who are "also play"). A good player can do things with a contra and a bassoon part that you just can't do on a bassoon. ☺

The best thing to do is talk to one of your music professors. I took it off my bio but I teach 3rd year Eng Lit. Your chances of getting one, two or even three or more scholarships are good. There are dozens in each faculty that go begging because no one applied or the person(s) who did apply are not qualified.

One of your profs will be able to point you to several. Usually most of them are less than a $1,000, but put a few of these togethor each year with perhaps a larger one and they can really add up to some real $$$. Most are vanity bequests to your specific University and Faculty which is why you don't always hear about them until you get admittance to the University.

Good luck and best wishes!!!
