Also if you give gifts to your children on Christmas, why? Is it because that other people's children are getting gifts and you don't want them to feel left out? What reason do you have for giving a gift on a holiday? Why can't you give a gift to someone because you appreciate them and/or because they are good children?

Desi, there are seasons of gift giving in every culture. Christmas is the season for the West, since they have a long history of Christian tradition in their culture. Today, Christmas is celebrated on a pretty secular level so I'm sure a lot of people celebrate because they want to be a part of the festivities (and there's nothing wrong with that).

Well i dont have extended family so that part i can't answer. I have my parents, and my brother, and my kids and husband. his parents are gone.

Why do i by presents for my kids, because i want to. I think thats a good enough reason. It has nothing to do with other people, other wise presents i buy would be the same things or similar things that other people buy their kids. I give a gift in general to someone because it's a way of showing my love, to them, and a figt to me is something that someone needs at that time, be it a journal, be it a piece of cooking ware is a gift to me.

I give cards, and spoken words to someone to show appreciate them. And i dont give a gift to a child for being good. It's a special occation not just an every day thing. It takes away from the idea of giving a gift.

I don't spend time with my extended family during the holiday season as they live all up and down the Eastern seaboard of the US and my in-laws live in England.

I have no children. I do give my husband a few small gifts at Christmas but then I also buy him gifts through-out the year just because.

I spend time with my family all year round. In fact I just recently got home from my Grandmother's. I go there every Friday night and spend time with here my uncles and aunts. Yes I buy gifts at Christmas but I also buy gifts year round. If I have the money and know something someone wants I will often buy it for them. Bu Christmas is a good time of the year. Especially when you don't forget the reason for it. Jesus is the whole point of Christmas.

I do enjoy being with extended family when the opportunity arises. I do give mementos to show I thought about the people at any time of the year. I seldom give gifts right on Christmas. Christmas is a good time to spend time with friends and family while they have the time.

People see their extended family on holidays because they usually don't get to see them @ other times of the year. If they do its not as much as they'd like.I have no kids to give presents to. But my family gifts @ Christmas. I do it because it models what the Magi did @ seeing the young Christ. They gave gifts! I do gifts @ other times to just acknowledge a job well done, etc.

Because people use ALL sorts of occasions to give gifts . Birthdays , visiting , anniversaries , Valentine's Day , Marraige , house warmings . It is just a social custom .
Why do you assume we don't give gifts at other times . I certainly do . And even more important I HELP people .
X-mas gifts are just a social custom , like bringing a bottle of wine to dinner .
The question seems to be why are you so bent out of shape over it ? ! ! !

It's simply tradition to many families. Also, we have more time off from work around Christmas and schools are closed. There's lots of traditions commonly accepted that really have no explanation behind them. Consider birthday cakes. Whoever started that one??!!

I have no family. Careful who you assume about. Are you then God? I understand the intent of this question, but it is in judgemental territory... I give as I am given. Regardless of the season.

My two daughters have worked their butts off to do everything right... education, compassion, loving... I am so lucky to have the siblings, children and spouse that I have...

I give my children everything I can afford because they have earned it!
