isnt there supposed to be a balance? will the people who cant afford to go to college get forced into the service/labor industry? everyone seems to have such high goals here of starting a buisness and going to college and working high class jobs, which is great but if EVERYONE does that wont it cause some economic problems??? if you agree how could we fix those problems? if you disagree explain your opinion.

Interesting question. People like me, who did NOT find a job in their major, may be willing to work in labor and service jobs. I do. There are a few reasons why I did not find a job in my major - partly because I'm picky about where I would like to live and partly because it was hard to find one that was full-time and not just seasonal. I'm currently working part-time and searching for full-time employment...getting desperate! I'm happy to just have a job.

I think things just seem to work out, because not everyone follows through with their field of study. Some companies will lay off workers; even if someone has an advanced degree and a lot of experience, this could happen at some point in their career. Those people may be forced into lower paying jobs. Right now I hear there is a great need for nurses, so sometimes there will be more higher paying jobs requiring a degree available than lower paying jobs.

First of all, for lots of reasons, not everyone will go to college. Some of the reasons are financial, some are ability, some are interests (a person for example wants a career that doesn't require college, maybe a carpenter, electrician or auto mechanic).

And some people who do go to college won't end up with "professional" jobs and will instead work in the service industries.

There are a lot of people who TALK about starting their own business but don't really have any chance of doing that successfully.

Well not all manual jobs are bad. Some actually enjoy the things they do (ie carpentry, electrician).

My college professor told me his room mate graduated valordictorian in an ivy league school with a degree in law. He now currently works in the plumbing business because he prefers plumbing over law.

You should just do something you're passionate about. When I first started working at a burger place, I loved flipping burgers (I guess guys like grilling).

I work in human resources and we are realizing that there is going to be a critical shortage of skilled trades workers (journeymen machinists). These jobs pay between $18-50 per hour and can be accomplished through either an apprenticeship program or through a community college.

There will always be people who will not go to college, so don't worry about whether there will be people in non-degreed jobs.

However, it is a mistake to think that a person who does not try to better themselves should expect to make a large amount of wages per hour. If you want to make more than minimum wage, it is important to have skills and abilities that allow you to be adaptable to work in different types of jobs. If you don't, it's possible that you will limit your choices in jobs.

Just because you have a degree doesn't mean you can't work labor jobs
