I don't live in Viriginia, but I am sure that it is illegal in all states to drive with a cracked windshield. If you are getting rid of the car soon, I probably would not do anything either; waste of time and money. They will only write you a citation for the windshield if they pull you over for something else like speeding and they notice it. I doubt they will pull you over for just that. Good luck!

It varies by state. Some places, yes, some places only if vision is impaired.
In Alaska, it is pretty much expected that your windshield will be cracked (unpaved roads, gravel used instead of salt), so even at that point you aren't likely to be hassled about it...not until it gets REALLY bad.
In some states, if you have any crack at all, you could be ticketed or fail inspection.
Check with your DMV. Search their website. If they don't have a decent search feature on their site, enter their URL in google like this: "site:http://www.dmv.state.gov" (or whatever it is) then search for appropriate items ("windshield" and "crack")

In my state you can have a crack unless it is in the wiper area. You must get it fixed then. I think in some of the warmer states they may be a little more lenient since the sun beating on the windows will crack them. I see a lot of cracked windshields in CA, AZ, NM, etc.

In most states it's the police officer's call. The windshield not only provides protection and visibility but also provides substantial support for the roof of the vehicle.

I believe so. As soon as you realize that you have a cracked windshield, you should have it fixed.

yes it is illegal to operate a vehicle with any glass broke.the windshield mostly. most states will give what they call you a fixit ticket. if you get the citation you go get it fixed and go to the police station, they see that the glass is fixed and thats it. it will not stay on your record.

If two cracks intersect you must replace it as a vehicle hazard.

Not unless it's so cracked that you can't see properly out of it ...on BOTH sides of the car...not just the driver's side.
