Can't really say myself because I haven't really travelled much. I was reading the book Crap Towns, and was wondering what other people thought the worst town in England is, accounting for architecture, basic upkeep of the town, parks, and, obviously, people.

Ooh, there's some competition there... Crap Towns is essentially made up of contributions from people who don't like the place but don't live there either. Best example being every contributor commenting about Glasgow comes from Edinburgh, and vice versa.
I'd say somewhere obvious, like Portsmouth, and only bits of it. I don't live there, but I used to.... It's called a lucky escape.

Romford beats allcomers.

Disadvantages: when I lived there, there was a ghastly shopping centre, top cultural venue was the snooker club where various champions played.
There used to be a ghastly white elephant called the Dolphin, a swimming pool which cost more than an Olympic size pool but had a wave machine , wow!! This had to be closed because the roof leaked!!

People in this area seem to think they are better than Eastenders, as they have 'made it'.
A 'keep yourselves to yourselves' atitude is all too common.

Absolutely nothing wrong with Liverpool. Most people who give my city a bad name have never been here. It's a city with centuries of history. I left when I was 18, lived in many countries and cities and have ended up here again more than 10 years later.

Worst places are the new towns like Stevenage, Milton Keynes, etc.... and I have been to both, Their town centres are awful!

According to the late Poet Lariat, John Betcheman, Slough was the worst town not just in England but in the whole world.
John Betcheman wrote a poem about Slough during WW2 in which one line reads, "Oh friendly bombs come rain on Slough"...etc. He disliked the place so much, he seemed not to care if the Nazi Luftwaffe just came over one night and blew the place up.

Redditch, Worc's.

I lived there once, and it is full of estates, made up of hundred's of "littlte boxes made of ticky tacky tacky" houses.

I was glad to move away from the dump, and I now live in a rural village in Cornwall, a "million miles" away.
