The two system you choice to compare are way down on the low end of home theater systems.

But if that's your budget let see what we can find.

First lets look at system with out DVD players in them. This lets the manufacture to use the money to build a better amp and processor.

This is a Onkyo system for only 352.99 here's a link...

If the money is burning a hole in your pocket and you can't afford to spend more, then Audio Installer is right. Look at Onkyo or Yamaha, preferably Yamaha.

In this immediate gratification world we live in, it's hard to find someone with a little patience but if you are that person, save your money and buy separates and a decent set of speakers when you can afford them. The cost is not that much higher and the difference in performance is dramatic!

the simpler answer for ht systems w/a built in dvd player is the samsung, it just has an overall better sound. and more wattage will let you get an increase of sound at lower volumes. where with the phillips it will be necessary to crank it up all the time to get that much out of it. also if your a novice and dont want to get inlolved with the more complicated hook up of a seperate dvd player the samsung will be just fine
