Do you have something like a half way house where people coming off drugs, violence, homeless and the like are assisted through their troubles? It could be a religious charity or some other sponsor. One in CT is run by a nun's organization where we took several men's suits, sport coats trousers, ladies dresses, suits , skirts, ladies shoes, purses and winter garments. Our daughter in law gave us the idea.

The Hospice is a good organization. They help people with life threatening illnesses who aren't going to get any better. They help the dying person as well as the entire family to learn how to cope with the inevitable and how to cope with the feelings they have. Often times, the person who is ill is the parent who was considered the "bread-winner" of the family and now the family suffers through not only watching their loved one slowly die, they are also faced with a financial hardship. That is where the Hospice can also help by providing clothing, furniture, bed linens, and sometimes food. I always donate to Hospice and the Salvation Army second.

We donate to a local foster care agency. The clothing is used for children entering foster care and the household items are for foster kids leaving the system to be on their own. I also use free cycle.

I give mostly to the Viet Veterans or the homeless Iraq veterans. You will need to call both organizations for a listing. I think the homeless veterans might be listed as American Vets.
