i have two dogs. a medium sized mix breed and a small red Jack Russell terrier. i let them outside and then a lil while after they came back in they started acting extremely afraid.

they're shaking uncontrollably and panting like they've been running a lot.

my smaller dog seems to want to be very close to me.

any ideas of what's wrong with them?

they may have heard a sound that was to far away for humans to have heard, and been spooked. My Rat Terrier does it all the time. They have good hearing, so loud booming noises or sudden noises scare them. It's common in alot of dogs. They're probably shadowing you around the house, and/or hiding under things. Nothing to worry about, unless it keeps going for more than a day or two (which it shouldn't). It may last a few minutes, to a few hours. Could be a storm on the horizon. Just watch them, they should be fine

(remember, terriers are waaay more high strung than bigger dogs, which is proably why the smaller one is more affected)

Sounds like something outside spooked them. Please be very careful and keep a close eye on them when they are outside. There are sick people out there. In my town just this week a dog was found that had been tortured and killed. (I don't mean to scare you, but it's just a good idea not to leave them unattended outside for too long)

I'm sure this situation was nothing like that, though. Dogs can be scared by lots of things, especially noises. My dog trembles uncontrollably when the smoke alarm "chirps" because of low battery.

Watch them carefully make sure the symptoms doesnt continue they could have eaten something that they shouldnt have and then they would need to see a vet. Could be anxiety something very well could have scared them, keep a close eye on them if they dont stop, will not eat or drink for more then 1 hour id call the vet.

I HIGHLY agree with Patriot. Keep an extremely close on them and if it doesn't stop call your vet.

Maybe take a look outside and see if there is anything that they could have gotten into or may have frightened them.

Not being out with them makes it hard to know whats wrong. If you are extremely worried, don't hesitate. Call your Vet or Emergency Vet now.

Good luck and keep us updated.

It sounds like they were scared really bad by something or some animal or someone.

check them to make sure they don't have any cuts or injuries.

Act very calm with them. Talk soothingly and give them calm conversation and interactions. Keep an eye on them. If they got into anything poisonous, they'll develop symptoms and you'll have to get them to a vet. If nothing further develops, you just need to calm them.

Were you outside with them? Something scared them most likely and they're reacting to that. Most dogs coming in from a short run don't act like that, so I'd suspect a noise or person frightened them.

Keep a very close eye on them or take them straight to the vet. Sounds like the symptoms my dog had from strycchnine poisoning.

I would keep them close to you and let them know they're safe with you. The next time you let them out either go out with them or just keep an eye on them. Personally I would go outside with them and make sure they do their deed and see what's troubling them.

Something scared a Jack Russell? No way! It must be dark out there. It couldn't be heat stroke could it? Is it hot there?

Have you looked at what might be outside? Depending, it could have been another dog, or, depending on where you live, it could have been a plethora of other criters that could have spooked them.

Best thought I had.

Hope that helps
