In my humble opinion, all cussing is not taking God's name in vain. I personally steer very clear of using any form of God's name in any vain way. Dropping an occasional F-bomb, while many consider it to be low class, vulgar and a sign of total ignorance, it does not violate the commandment to not use God's name in vain. Nevertheless, God gave us a beautiful language to describe the world around us so we do have many options of alternative words to use. Keep in mind that how we communicate with others shows what is truly in our heart.

You're right.
Not all "cussing" is taking God's name in vain. The cussing that does use the name "God," or "Jesus" would be clearly breaking that commandment.
But the "F" word and the body parts words -- they're rude, but they don't break the commandment. There are no commandments against being rude. If there were, there would be plenty Bible-thumping proselytizers who would be destined for the devil's hottest ovens.
They might be a sin if they fall under the "causing a stumbling block for others" umbrella, though.

It's not. But here's a more profound way of looking at it, in my opinion:
Are people who call themselves Christians of followers of Jesus not "taking the name of the Lord" upon themselves? If someone calls themself a Christian, but lives in a way that is contrary to everything that Christ taught and stood for, wouldn't that be the REAL meaning of taking his name in vain? If you're bearing the name of the Lord in a way that dishonors it, and causes it to be associated not with Love and Peace and Goodness, but with hatred, mean-spiritedness, judgmentalism, etc... that's what I think the commandment is really about. Not about cussing.
Peace to you.

That is not God's name in vain...though I don't agree with the poor choice of those words...being used...but they are not His name in vain...... I would ask for guidance through prayer on these questions...I think some believe differently ...on God's name in vain.....bottom line...get leadership through prayer...and discernment......rather than relying on someone's opinion...May God Bless You.

It's not.
Unless you say it when you happen to call yourself a CHRISTian. Then you have taken Christ's name without following his example of meekness. So that people suspect that it was in vain because it didn't affect your character.

Most people don't even know what GOD's name is. Much less how to make HIS name vain.

In vanity is how the Lord's name is taken most often...
Especially by Church leaders who claim to speak on God's behalf.
Personally, I think any God worth believing in would understand a person's intention above their verbage.

The Bible says not to let any unclean words come out of your mouth. The ones you described would apply. We are exhorted to use words that are for edifying. All the times I have heard this word, it has never edified me, nor other listeners. It only gave the user a false sense of self-satisfaction, which is the root of pride.
And btw, if its just words made from sounds and have no meaning, then try yelling "fire" in a public place. Here is another fun experiment for those who proclaim this. Try using a collection of words like "I have a bomb" on your next airline flight. The fact is, words mean things. Theirs? Perhaps not as much. They are just typed words on a forum.

Think about this. If you call yourself a Christian, you are calling yourself a Follower of CHRIST. GOD tells us that we must be holy. Our conduct dictates who we believe and revolve our lives around. Can we be followers of CHRIST with a foul mouth?
GOD bless

I agree with Jon M, but I would add that if you curse in order to hurt or shock another person, that's where the sin would be.
