I really don't think that you should consider to pay your teacher for a letter of recommendation, a simple thank you card stating your appreciation would be more than appropriate .

I don't think the teacher ought to accept anything from someone he wrote a recommendation for. You could bake cookies, or buy a cake. Even a bottle of wine, maybe, but not hard liquor. Nothing that looks even slightly like a reward or a bribe.

I would say $25. That value is enough to actually want to go to the store and buy something, and at the same it's not too high of a value where as your teacher will feel too uncomfortable to accept it

I don't think a teacher should expect anything or receive anything especially monetary. You may want to send a thank you card to him/her and say thanks for taking the time to write the recommendation and also mention how much it meant to you to have the pleasure of being in his/her classroom.

Depends on what it was for. I never gave mine anything but a thank you and they were happy with that, but I guess if you do feel the need to get them something, I would say maybe $25 or so.
