Why do you think that God is suppose to prevent you from experiencing suffering and turmoil? Sure every one wants to live in a protected world, but to do so you are not living. Even Buddha was protected from trials and tribulations, by his family. When he found out that he was shielded from life, he set out to live a life that he was denied.

Who ever said that? God never promised that either. In chronological order (and skipping many)... Did He protect Abel from Cain? Did He protect Noah from the ridicule of the world while he built God's Ark? Did He protect Abraham from making the mistake of taking Hagar to bed and producing Ishmael? Did He protect Lot's wife from turning into a pillar of salt? Did He protect Lot from his daughters getting him drunk and sleeping with him? Did He protect Isaac from getting cheated by Laban into working an additional seven years to get his intended bride, Rachael, after Laban tricked Isaac into marrying Leah first? Did He protect Esau from making the mistake of selling his birthright for a bowl of lentils? Did He protect Isaac from being fooled into giving Jacob the eldest's blessing instead of Esau? Did He protect Jacob, now Israel, from also making the mistake of going to bed with more than one woman? Did He protect Joseph from being thrown into a pit and being sold into slavery? Did He protect Joseph from being falsely accused of rape and, thereby, getting thrown into the dungeon for a crime he didn't commit? Did He protect the Children of Israel from being turned into slaves in the Land of Egypt? Did He protect Moses from killing an Egyptian? Did He protect the Children of Israel from creating an idol (the golden calf) and worshiping it so that 3,000 men ended up dying as a result of their sin? Did He protect Moses from losing his temper and striking the rock the second time, instead of speaking to it, thereby costing him his life and preventing him from entering the land of Canaan? Did He protect the Children of Israel so that they wouldn't be captured by the Babylonians and carried off to Babylon? Did He protect many of the captured young men of Israel from being turned into eunuchs? Did He keep the three Hebrew boys from being tossed into the fiery furnace? Did He keep Daniel from being tossed into the lion's den? When the Children of Israel were finally allowed to return to Jerusalem, why didn't God protect them from the raiders around them while they tried to rebuild the city? Did He protect them from becoming so legalistic that they couldn't even recognize the Messiah when He came? Did He protect even His own Son from having the flesh ripped from His back and being crucified, naked, on a cross in front of his mother, thousands of mocking Jews, and the Pagans (the Romans)?

The collective answer is a resounding, "No!"

If He didn't do any of that, what makes you think He will protect or shield His Children today any better?

No, God won't protect you from the trials and tribulations of life. Each situation is a chance for you to not just test your faith but put it into practice and trust he will see you through the situation. Usually there's some kind of lesson which is learned as a result even though we can't see it when we are going through the times of crisis. No, he won't shield you from the trials and tribulations but he'll walk you through them if you will allow him.

Not really. In fact, Christ promises tribulation.

John 16:33
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world

Acts 14:22
Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.

Romans 5:3,4
3And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;
4And patience, experience; and experience, hope:

It is reasonable, but should not be expected always. Remember that there are a lot of religiously close to God but were not spared of the painfull realities of life. For every stage in one's life - good or bad, there is a reason why God allowed or dis-allowed it to happened. That is commonly called - "Blessings in Disguise".

Buddha also abandonded his wife and children and went to look for enlightenment within himself... even though he was the one already confused.....????

God won't shelter you from anything more than you can endure. THe Bible says to pray not that God will take away the suffering but that God will be with you and help you endure!

If you lead a shielded life, how can you expect to grow?
Similarly (if you read Psalms) David, grumbled and moaned about things but in the end turned it back to God.

I wouldn't think nor expect God to shield me from them as I would expect you to give you that opportunity to turn to him and grow.

Jesus does protect me, time and time again even though I do not deserve it. I tested Him slowly in the beginning of my journey with Him. Oh, ye of little faith. That was me. I now trust him with everything and anything. Completely. I have no fear of my future. Or my death. Family is not the same as God/Jesus. You can not put your faith and trust in any Man. If you do, you will fail.

If you believe in God than it would have been reasonable. A lot of God loving people expected to be protected by God and it did them no good. (Wars, Hunger, Illnesses etc.)
If people that believe in God didn't expect to be protected, they wouldn't have prayed to it!!!
