Turns out that rats have the ability to reflect on their own thought processes, an ability that has only been attributed to humans and some primates.
So, rats can and DO think, they know what they do and don't know! They process their thoughts and learn from them!!
This marks true intelligence. Rats aren't like dogs in that they know what is what because of a reward, they know it because they THINK about it.
Rats, the true equal to man!!

Now, there should be no excuses against rats! They are truly intelligent creatures!
Abandon musophobia and embrace a new utopia!

Yep, this is something I learned about 2 years ago, and rat fanciers didn't need no shinkin' scientists to tell us what we already knew. But I am glad to see that the scientists have finally caught up to us :)
This is why rats are still so hated by humans. Rats have always been associated with disease and disgust, destroyers of homes, the bringers of mayham, and competition for the same resources. The same vices that man carries. Man sees this in himself and it inferiates him. The rat becomes the scape-goat. It's hard to compete with an animal that is so much like himself, including intelligence, and the ability to reason. For someone who believes that the rat is beneath him, and not his equal, it is just too much to bare.
There is a saying in the world of rat fanciers:
"The dog looks up to us,
The cat looks down on us,
But Rats see us as their equal"

Wow, I have known that for about 1 year and realized it the day I got my first rat about 1 year ago. I put the cage on a dresser and I had a hard time getting them out then 1 day (she was still tiny 6 weeks old) she started jumping to the top of her tank and she did a little push up thing to hold herself up and her feet for balance and to this day she still does that.
P.S the first 7 months of her life she was in a 10 gallon and now in a 29 gallon HIGH but still does it!

That is really neat....I knew they were very smart and once we got 2 they have proven their smarts...I left the cage door open and forgot, went to bed and woke up at 1am with a furry little something on my arm..it was my one rat lucy..she came a long ways to find me upstairs no less where she had never been and she did go to the couch first where my husband feel asleep cause he heard a squeak when he rolled over but ignored it (typical man) then she found me so yes they are quite brilliant.

anyone who has owned a rat will understand how smart they are.
pity that most people hate them because they think they stink and dont like their tails.
when people think of rats they think big fat wild rats with tonnes of germs not the clean fancy rats that people keep!

I don't think people realize how good of pets rats make. I had two and loved them to pieces. If I could have one I'd definitely get one now.
