I got mine in boot cvamp in the late '70's and they are metal, but my brother's is from the mid '80's and his are plastic.
So I guess nowadays, they are plastic. It's a shame, the metal buttons are much cooler.

The Navy must have fluctuated on the buttons. PH said his from the late 70's had metal buttons yet mine from 1959 had plastic buttons. Go figure.
A personal comment on the Peacoat. How could something so thick and heavy not keep you warm? It had to be the worst coat ever made. The wind would blow up those big open sleeves and you froze your butt off.

They are plastic. Suprisingly, the buttons on my Old Navy peacoat are the exact same as my husband's real Navy peacoat....they have the exact same anchors on them, but mine have "Old Navy" printed around the anchor.
