Yes, one of my issues with it all - the Bible is clearly a collection of religious texts from vastly different authors and traditions and this is very clearly shown in the differing powers and control he has and the changes in his approach from, practically, page to page. Is he in control? Does he need our prayers? Why do we need to pray if he cares for us and knows all about everything we do and feel and think? Why?
The sad part is that the confusion about God and his motives and even his powers is a reason many people lose their faith. So the insistence on holding the Bible as a "work created under divine influence" may comfort the illiterate, but it drives the thoughtful away. It makes a good arguement for keeping religious texts from the hands of the masses, though doesn't it?
A religion with a more comprehensive vision of who the divine is and what they want and what they can and cannot and will and willnot do would be vastly more successful. But a lot of our religious texts are collections where the vision and even beliefs of each author is different, so God is different in each section. We look for a comprehensive vision and we are given fragments from different pictures entirely. We are left with a box of mis-matched puzzle pieces. He is not even exactly in the mind of his adherents.
