Before you go to your local walmart and pick something off the shelf like an ugly stick (shivers), go to your local tackle store and check out their selection. I'm sure that for around only $50 you can get a good rod with a good warranty. I highly favor Shimano rods (great quality and great lifetime warranty).
And just a word about Ugly Sticks... they are crap!!!! i wish people would quit recommending them! they are made with substandard components and a very low graphite content which means they have low sensitivity and high weight. On top of all that, their warranty is basically non existent... a whole 60 days. whoopty do.
In the world of fishing rods, you get what you pay for!!!
Edit: Ugly Sticks don't come back because people assume that for $40, when the rod snaps or the guides pop off that there is no warranty and they would be correct, so they just toss it. If you'll read my answer more carefully, you can see that I am merely suggesting that they spend a little more money for ALOT more quality so they don't have to keep going out and buying another crap rod, i.e. an Ugly Stick!
imho, any rod manufacturer that doesn't give a good warranty on their rod, doesn't think much of their product or of keeping it's customers happy.
And as far as ratings, i don't make them and i don't care. I don't tear down anyone's answers and if anyone takes it that way then they are taking yahoo answers way to personally. I'm not pointing to any one answerer, I'm simply stating the facts about ugly sticks as I see them.

At the stores you mentioned you should find Ugly Sticks made by Shakespeare. Inexpensive, but still good quality. They make a full line of rods and reels that will fit almost every purpose. Once you know what line wt. you want, you might even consider a rod and reel combination that may fit your needs. Can be a good way to save some money also.
Edit: Backup to Injun, Hi by the way. To the last answer, you know who you are. You might try reading the question and understanding what is being asked for before sounding off. The Ugly Sick may not be for everybody but for this application I still stand by my answer, and even if this person came into my shop I would not hesitate to make the same recommendation.
As to the assertion that they are crap, you should look again. I have built and repaired rods professionally for 20+ years and I can say that for the price, the Ugly Stick is far better built than some higher end rods I can name. True, they don"t have the same warranty as others but you know what, they don't come back either. They are not a sensitive rod, you are correct again, but read the question, fishing off of a pier does not require a sensitive rod.
Give a thumbs down,as I have no problems with people who have other opinions, and most answers are just opinions, that makes this fun, interesting, and educational. There is no right or wrong answer to every question. I just prefer to see people make the case for their own opinion in a positive manner, rather than tearing someone else down to build up their own fragile ego.
I feel much better now!!

Wal-mart carries a great surf caster for under 30 bucks. I've had mine for four years and caught fish that should have shattered the rod but didn't.

You can go to any bait tackle shop and pick up a combo for $30. I have done it many times and cought alot of fish, you might change the line though, they tend to put cheap stuff in em. These combos are perfect for pier fishing

I'm going with Bob & Ingun on this Q.
You can't beat an Ugly Stik or Ugly Stik "Lite" for quality & expense!
Get an Ugly Stik, you won't regret it!
