My indoor only cats don't have worms but they do sometimes have "dingles" that get stuck to their hair and I see them drag their butt on the carpets.

They have a itch that needs to be scratched. My moms dog does this and it something to do with her glands... basically dad explained it like dog hemmoroids. A good itch feels pretty good but still none the less pretty gross. It could also be worms which is gross and you ned to clean your carpets. Cats i havent seen do this. I hear its from worms though too.
My mom also has a yorkie, shell drag when her hair gets too long and gets tangled... nasty! Keep um clean, check for fleas, check thei poop for worms. Bring in a stool sample to the vet just to check and see usually about 12 bucks. Over the counter wormers might help if you see something in their poo. Always check with your vet though, any irritation can cause them to itch.
Stopping it for cats use a squirt bottle wih water. Dogs im not too sure...?

For dogs 9 times out of 10 their anal glands need to be expressed. This is a problem with cats too, only not as common. Worms can also be one of the reasons, although we mainly see the anal glands being full as the #1 problem for scooting.

Hi there...if your pets are scooting their bum on surfaces regularly the anal sacs will need to be expressed. This is something which should be done by a vet.
More on pets who scoot: [for some reason Yahoo Answers will not let me not post the link--if you can Google "Marvistavet anal sacs"... the first link listed is the link I'm trying to post]
Pets who have soft bowel movements suffer more from anal sac impactions because regular stools push on the glands to express them during the movement. Consider offering canned pumpkin (not the pie variety with spices) to help add fibre into the diet, which will firm up the stools. http://www.pets.ca/pettips/tips-75.htm

^^ My dog does that all the time, well use too. They do it because their butt itches, but it is not good for them to do it. I forgot how my family got my dog to stop doing it, but I recommend asking a local vet for some ideas as how to get them to step doing it.

Dogs 1) if they have long hair, it may be to clean it (gross)
2) they have anal glands that can get stopped up and this is a method to get them to drain (also gross)
Cats I have never seen a cat do this, but I would suspect tapeworms. Cats get them from cat fleas.

Take them to the vet to make sure they don't have worms. That can cause the itchies. Next, get the carpet shampooed. Ewww!

Impacted anal glands are a common cause, as are worms. A vet can check and treat both very easily.
