Actually there are three facts I can point to .
First is the law of average size differential . Studies show that mammals tend to take mates in relation to the relative size of the sexes . Humans would tend to take 2 or 3 wives .
Second is the aforementioned condition that a woman has child once every 10 months or so whereas a man can father several a day .
Three , It is easier , more natural, due to the fuctions ( psychological effects ) of testosterone , for women to get along in a close knit unit ( including on a sexual level ) than the more competitive males .
BUT morally I see no problem in men or women having multiple mates .
Edit : I thought of a fourth reason . Men can father children later in life than a woman . so therefore he would take a younger wife into the household .

kujigafy definitly makes the most sense, ive never thought about it that way. Also in Islam, the number of man to women ratio is predicted as one of the signs of the day of judgment; 1man:5 women. we already have evidence that the y chromosome that defines a man is disappearing. (by the way how could a book from 1500 years ago predict that unless it was divine?) More women will need support so islam says that up to four wifes is allowed but having one is better because each wife has to be treated completely equally to avoid jealousy/hatred of each other. of course this is almost impossible which is why only having one wife is the best, safest way to go.

I would like to tell you that all the Religions that now exists in this World are of created by men from begining to this date, so far as my knowledge goes. Therefore the code of conduct in creation of any religion depends upon the ideas/wishes of the creator.
My answer to this question is that as we are free to take our own decision in this matter based on our consciousness then why should we go into searching such a delicate matter. Here I could not find any place for justice or injustice and it is a person's moral responsibility to choose which is best and also acceptable to himself and the Society and this should away from any form of absues.

This patently discriminatory in certai religions that allow men alone to havew more number of wives at their will. They ae religions that treat women as sexual toys .Only such of those religions which restricts men from havig more than one wife treat women equally with men.,
In olden days almost in all parts of theworld men have beenhaving more number of wives ,just like themonkeys hav8ing ahoard of femals and .the strongest amont the maled could drive the weaker old one and grab all the females that theolder one was having .such a tendency continues in some cultue with religious fervour .Thse thisg must change twith the change of times and men should not seek pot continue this barbaric habit in the name of religion

Many religions started with this rule (including chritianity) simply to increase the population of their faith. Some religions have no rule about marriage at all.
Side note: Marriage today is not what it was before the 20th century. It was mostly a deal worked out between fathers for financial reasons.

i dont think polygammy should be allowed - but logically, it would make more sense for a man to have multiple wives then the other way around. a woman can only become pregnant once at a time, a man can father unlimited amounts of children constantly. this is the only logical reason polygamy ever came into use.

Gender equality doesn't mean gender sameness or identicalness.
Ovum doesn't function like sperm, and vice-versa.
Monogamy is the rule; polygamy (or more correct Islamic term, polygyny), a very, very strict exception with very, very strict rules. Polyandry--women having more than one husband--is not allowed in Islam under any circumstances.
