You either have to have the money on deposit with Paypal or a bank account they can draw it from or a credit card they can charge it to. They do not lend you money!

You don't need to put any money into a Paypal account.

Buying using Paypal, the money will be taken from your checking account at your bank. They will do a debit on it - like using an ATM/Debit card.

If you want to use your credit card with Paypal, you have to change the source of funds each time you buy something. Your bank account is the automatic default option. Even after you change the funding source to your credit card, Paypal will ask you if you're sure you want to do that. Click 'yes' and you're credit card will be used as the primary funding source for that purchase.

I always use my credit card for merchants who only take Paypal because my credit card company will be more likely to back me up than Paypal if there's a problem w/ the purchase.

Paypal just makes the money transfer. You still have to have the money in your account to buy something and pay through Paypal.
