Just go to Trader Joe's, all their wines are very very affordable (most are under $15) and go nuts. As far as which red wine specifically is such a general question that no one could really tell you, there are many different varietals of red wine and then each specific one has many different brands and each brand has different years :-) So you have to narrow this down for yourself Do you want a sweet wine? That will rule out almost all red's other than Port and handful of others. Do you want a heavy wine (to stand up to steak) that would be a Cabernet Sauvignon, or Bordeaux, Syrah. Do you want a medium wine (chicken and some fish), then Merlot, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir. A wine expert would probably kick my butt for this kind of simple breakdown, but I think it'll get you going on the right track. If you have absolutely no clue, why don't you go for a Zinfandel ... maybe a Rancho Zabaco - Dancing Bull (CA) 2004 which goes for about $9.00 Good Luck!

For what it is worth the tasters at "Decanter", the world's best wine magazine, rated as the world's best red wine value that has broad distribution the Concha y Toro Castelleiro del Diablo Cabernet Saugignon. It costs around $ 7US in most of the USA, about 3 - 4 pounds in Britain and about $ 12 - $ 14CDN in Canada.

I've never had a bad bottle of Barefoot Wine, and I can get it for $5-$7 locally. Merlot, Cabernet, Syrah are all pretty good.
Really though, I recommend just scanning the liquor store ads (if you have those) and you'll find reasonable sales. Keep a wine journal to note bottles that you like and ones you don't. If you drink a few glasses, don't forget to brush your teeth (it can make them purple!) Bottoms up. :)

I can't say these are "good" red wines, but I love to have holiday spiced wine in November and December, and Maneschewitz Concord Grape Wine around Passover/Easter time! Yum-yum!

Bouchon (about $10 a bottle) one of my favorites
Get it at www.mywinesdirect.com

Also any of the Yellowtail reds are very good and inexpensive - about $5 - $6 a bottle. And are at retail wine stores.

Black Mountain Pinot Noir (about $5/bottle at Trader Joe's).

For a splurge I really like Erath's Pinot Noir. But it ranges from $19-$40 a bottle...yummy but not something to drink often.

Good luck and trust your own taste-buds.

"Red Truck" Table Wine is absolutely delicious and 7-8 bucks. Also try any selection by Bonny Doon.

My husband and I like Barefoot wine. Try the Shiraz. It's only about 5.00 a bottle. And, at our local store it is on sale a lot.
