You are not old. I am 41. Another competition rider who I cycle out with in my club is 70 and still very fit.
Overall, cycling is a good cardiovascular work out. Burns fat, keeps you slim, etc. I started in my late 30s, having quit smoking (20 years - 1/2 oz per day). You feel better, fitter etc.
Alternatively, you could spend money on gym membership that you will hardly ever use, getting board pumping weights etc. Alternatively, if you enjoy riding a bike, get fit doing something you like. Join a local club (Group therapy) and go out for weekend events etc. At the end of the day, only you can answer why you should cycle.
Luck

1. Getting places faster than walking
2. You're not old!! The oldest person in our cycling group is 75 and he beats us all and goes off up in the hills and goes up and down extra hills just for fun -he's a nut!! But he's in GREAT shape and very healthy- you'd think he was 30-40 yrs. old.
3. It's fun! You see the world at a slower pace than in a car, and notice things you didn't notice before. Details!
4. Bike technology has improved immensely, giving you a smooth comfortable ride with shocks and disk brakes - it's insane how far technology has come on new bikes, if you choose to go that route.

33 isn't old! I'm 45 and got back into cycling about 4 or 5 years ago after a 15 year absence. Within the first year I lost about 50 pounds and have kept it off.
In addition to dropping some unwanted pounds, you'll feel better have more energy and look great.

I started riding at 33 and the pounds just dropped off. Like i was dying of something but didn't have those nasty hospital bills to deal with. It was awsome. Started for the exercise then discovered I loved it for its own sake. You'll get the benefits of the exercise, seeing things you never noticed from your car, you'll want to go to new places and ride, its all good.

If you start riding a bike now and keep doing it, it will benefit you half as much as it will when you're 66. You might even make it that far!

Well, besides all the benefits listed above, it'll boost your libido (but you may want to get a saddle with a channel down the middle). This has nothing to do with cycling specifically but aerobic exersice in general.
