The moment you realize that the effort far outweighs the potential benefit, or the potential benefit is not attainable. At that point, you can either adjust your goals or cut your losses.
I personally have given up on trying to change the world. If the smartest people in the world and all the evidence they've gathered aren't enough to convince people, then my two cents can only go so far.
Of course, that doesn't mean that I don't bother the people that visit this forum from time to time. I figure, if I ask the right questions, they'll at least have to think about things and be forced to see that there are many different views on such subjects. All I need to plant is a reasonable doubt. After that, they can do as they please.

When the people who matter most to me are going to get hurt.
When I realise the cost is more than the gain.
When I realise that to achieve/gain it, I would have to violate my ethics.
When I realise my time could be spent in a more worthwhile way.
When I realise I was chasing an illusion.
When I hear the little voice in my heart say "Enough".

When you're about to answer a "sincere" question and you realize the person has asked the same "sincere" question about 30 or 40 times in a row.
That's when you realize they view themselves as meter maids with a book of violation notices and a quota to meet.
If someone really doesn't want to learn, I am not going to waste my time answering their question.

At this point right now.
Men have brought me nothing but pain and rejection.
My mind knows that love is not in the cards for me.
My damn stupid heart has hope. I hate it.

Depends on the situation and how much I have invested in it emotionally. I am typically not one to surrender
*Trivial things I usually give up on easily.
*If friends are arguing I let them know I love them and stay out of it
* Any situation with my girls, I will go to the ends of the earth. They would have to really disappoint me for me to give up on them. And I don't see that happening. So they always have my support.
*My friends are important to me and I am really loyal so I would have to weigh each situation individually

It depends upon the situation, but if you are at a point where your heart isn't in what you are doing, then would be a good time.
