México, Nov. 23 (PL).— In the latest anti-immigration operation in the United States, dubbed "Zero Tolerance," 100 Mexican citizens were jailed and charged with crimes, it was announced today.

The operation was carried out by the U.S. Border Patrol along the area dividing Laredo, Texas and Mexican territory, and had been officially announced 20 days previously.

Instead of simply deporting Mexicans caught trying to cross the border without documentation, under the new policy they are incarcerated in distant federal prisons and charged with crimes that can be punished with further prison time and large fines.

This new policy is an intensification of Washington’s repressive policies against those who go north seeking work and was condemned by participants in the recently-held Parliament of Migrant Workers of Mexico. They described it as a violation of human rights because of the unjust manner in which they are kept incarcerated for an undetermined time and without the possibility of returning to their nation.

The U.S. Border Patrol itself confirmed to local media that 100 Mexicans had been arrested to date and charged with the federal crime of trying to enter the United States illegally.

Immigrant-rights activists also said that these operations include the placement of all types of barriers along the border, causing immigrants to take more dangerous routes to make the crossing.

From 1986 to date, 10,000 Mexicans have died of hunger, thirst or in the course of being pursued in desert and mountain areas, including women and children. http://www.granma.cu/ingles/2007/noviembre/vier23/48mexi.html

I'm all for the arrests and fines, but we shouldn't be spending tax dollars on feeding and housing illegals longer than it takes to deport them.

Well, first of all, I don't know how accurate or truthfull an article about US immigration would be, when it was written in Mexico. Second, illegal entry into the United States IS A FEDERAL CRIME (8 USC 1325). It's about time something more than a "slap on the wrist" is given to those that violate immigration laws.

Way to go on the arrests! And while I, too, might question continuing to spend American dollars on them in prison......perhaps it IS better than immediate deportation. Immediate deportation without feeling a little "sting" means they will just be on their way back across within 48 hours.

After cooling their criminal butts in a US fed'l penitentiary for 6 months before we deport them to Tijuana, it just MIGHT make them think twice before they come across the border again.

Besides--we could use a few more license plates, right?

Great start now we just have to get rid of the rest of the 38 million that are here. Then deport them. Where's the Fence?

Not a bad start. Keep it up but build that double (or triple) wall!

Most of those 10,000 deaths (mentioned at the end) were likely caused by rival cartels, not starvation. These people have no more value for human life than we do for "recycle bin" data.

I thought it was hilarious that they seemed to think it was wrong for us to make it difficult for people to come illegally and [gasp!] even PUNISH them for it!

The only thing that will stop the illegal ALIENS from coming over the border is to SHOOT THEM ON SIGHT... if the Border Patrol could just start SHOOTING THEM and then leaving the bodies where everyone can see them... it wouldn't be too long before the illegal ALIENS got the message they aren't wanted.

Sounds good to me. Anything that will deter others from trying is all good. It is no ones fault except that person who is trying to enter illegally.
